Background of the Study
Obesity, once considered a health issue of affluent societies, is increasingly prevalent across all socioeconomic strata in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. In Zamfara State, where poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare are persistent challenges, the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and obesity is complex and multifaceted (Adewale et al., 2023). While higher-income individuals may have greater access to calorie-dense processed foods and sedentary lifestyles, lower-income groups may also face a paradoxical risk of obesity due to the consumption of inexpensive, energy-dense foods with low nutritional value (Ogunyemi & Hassan, 2024).

In addition, social determinants such as education, employment, and access to healthcare play critical roles in shaping dietary behaviors, physical activity patterns, and health outcomes. The coexistence of obesity and undernutrition within the same communities underscores the need to understand how SES influences obesity rates in Zamfara State. As obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other NCDs, investigating its socioeconomic determinants is essential for designing targeted interventions that address both prevention and management. This study will explore the link between SES and obesity rates in Zamfara State, providing evidence to support more effective public health strategies.

Statement of the Problem
The rising prevalence of obesity in Zamfara State suggests that economic, social, and environmental factors are contributing to unhealthy lifestyle choices. However, there is limited empirical research on the specific relationship between SES and obesity in the region. Without this understanding, public health interventions may fail to address the root causes of the problem, potentially exacerbating health inequalities. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the socioeconomic determinants of obesity in Zamfara State and identifying strategies to promote healthier lifestyles across different population groups.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the association between socioeconomic status and obesity rates in Zamfara State.
  2. To identify dietary and lifestyle patterns among different socioeconomic groups in the region.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing public health interventions aimed at reducing obesity rates in Zamfara State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between socioeconomic status and obesity rates in Zamfara State?
  2. How do dietary and physical activity patterns vary among different socioeconomic groups in the region?
  3. What public health strategies have been effective in addressing obesity in Zamfara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Socioeconomic status is significantly associated with obesity rates in Zamfara State.
  2. Lower-income groups are more likely to adopt dietary and lifestyle patterns that increase obesity risk.
  3. Targeted public health interventions can effectively reduce obesity rates across different socioeconomic groups in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will cover both urban and rural areas of Zamfara State, examining the impact of education, income, and occupation on obesity prevalence. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate self-reported data on dietary intake and physical activity, as well as potential confounding factors such as genetic predisposition to obesity.

Definitions of Terms
